Why yes, it’s that time of the year again.
It’s been three years.
Nope, I am still not over it.

And much easier to tell one from the other, unlike Schkaneder?

I understand what Schikaneder thought he was saying, but it’s interesting how it doesn’t play that way: Tamino is a stick, Sarastro a kidnapping cult leader whose sociopathy is reflected in Monastotos, the Queen a supersonic Elvira (Mistress of the Dark), Pamina the emotional focus and balance, and Papageno like Figaro a man who can be friends with a woman. Lots of that is in the music. If only Chereau had staged it.

Pamina and Papageno should just leave together, be friends, and start a democratic village community somewhere. (relatedly, Sifare should stop the alignment with patriarchy or he will turn into a Tamino stick and his Pamina-ish girlfriend will leave him)

*happy sigh*
I finally had the opportunity to watch this with my closest Opera Friend, and it was just as affecting for her as for us here.
(It also forced me to dig further into the libretto to translate for her since I only had French subtitles available.)
MP and PP did such wonderful work with this text. I’d love to see them reunite at some point!

Ah yes!
(WP also just told me that I have been doing this for 11 years already. Apt celebration.)

This one, for sure. (not that I’d be in much risk of forgetting about it, anyway)

I cannot wait to shout about this at youngsters from my seat at the cheesecake breakfast table at Shady Belcanto Pines.

I also remember clicking that link and saying nothing but “Oh. My. God.” For long minutes.
