Mezzo Mekka of the North (da capo)

On my way to the airport – Stockholm city snapshot. I do sense an overall theme here!

It was a pretty mezzo city these days, too, since apparently von Otter was in residence, Ann Hallenberg sang yesterday for Cecilia Bartoli being awarded the Polar Prize at Konserthuset, and Ernman continues to be a poster girl, not just for Grade A ally status, but also regarding her new album, “Sverige”.

Many good reasons to go back, plus next season’s program at Stockholm opera has “Le nozze di Figaro” with Camilla Tilling as Countess (yes please!!) and Johanna Rundström as Cherubino, “Jenufa” and “Ballo in maschera”, which generally means at least one soprano in trousers.

Also, next summer for Pride, you can get a rainbow-opera drop-in wedding in the opera house, if I understood correctly. At least if one of you is Swedish. Amazing. and on that note: thank you, Sweden, for making me feel – in a week tainted with so much grief for the queer community – welcome and appreciated.

    1. Me, too!
Well, I had them for a few days. At home, it will be rainbow flags on all trams again since it’s June – also makes me smile every time!

  1. Oh, Anik! So you finally reached Scandinavia! – or did I just miss your previous updates?
Well, that Pride fest -event is not due “next summer” like you stated, but this summer – it is summer also here in Scandinavia already. 😉
Here’s a link to the Stockholm event (it is in English although it looks like being in swedish):

Also here in Finland “international” mezzos appear from time to time… 🙂 Anne Sofie von Otter for example is a regular visitor in Helsinki. And Joyce DiDonato (bless her again for her contribution ( will be seen in Helsinki in November. So looking forward to it… 🙂

And Elina Garanca’s Liederabend is due in a couple of weeks at the Turku Music Festival!

    1. Ah, thanks! I had looked up the program for next season, and the marriage event was announced there. (Perhaps it will be an annual thing?)
No shortage of mezzos in Scandinavia at all – I can understand everyone wanting to go, since it is beautiful, but the Scandinavian line-up is already so strong that there is not really a need for imports!
